Sixteen seasons, eleven titles, plenty of crashes. And nothing but fond memories.
Scoreboard
Heat one
Born in Plzeň on 11 July 1989 and now living in Prague, he first rode a speedway bike at 14, had his first race at 15 – and went on to spend sixteen seasons racing in 17 countries on 3 continents.
The Czech Extraliga, British leagues and the Polish Ekstraliga, plus Sweden, Denmark and Germany – and winters in Argentina and Australia.
First attempts in Plzeň, straight on a 500 cc bike. In 2004 a move to Prague, his first junior races at 15 and a place at the Interior Ministry Sports Centre. A year later a broken back in the first meeting of the season – and in 2006 his first national title, in the Czech Pairs as a reserve, plus victory in the Heathersfield Golden Helmet, a junior meeting in Glasgow.
A contract with Berwick in England, a heavy crash and, 14 days later, bronze in the World Under-21 Team Championship. A junior hat-trick in 2008 and a contract with Rivne in Ukraine, then the Polish Ekstraliga with Unibax Toruń and a silver medal, three autumn challenge matches for Poole Pirates, European Pairs Champion two years running and, in 2010, Czech Individual Champion and winner of the SNP Golden Helmet and the Luboš Tomíček Memorial. Grand Prix wild cards in Prague.
Redcar Bears, Berwick Bandits and Newcastle Diamonds, with winters in Argentina and Australia. Rider of the Year at Berwick (2014) and at Redcar (2015), and back home three Extraliga titles with Olymp Markéta Praha, whom he captained from 2015 to 2018. A broken leg ended 2018, his last British season; in 2019 he rode only three meetings.
On he called time on his racing days. He has stayed with speedway, though: today he co-commentates on speedway broadcasts for Czech TV’s ČT Sport.
For newcomers
Motorcycle racing with no brakes. Four riders, four laps of an oval and roughly a minute of pure adrenaline.
The bikes have a single-cylinder four-stroke engine of up to 500 cc, run on methanol and accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h faster than a Formula 1 car. Riders slide sideways into the bends, controlling their speed with the throttle and their body.
Everything happens inside an enclosed stadium, so spectators see the whole race up close – often just a few metres from the riders and their bikes. Fast, thrilling entertainment for the whole family.

A move to Prague and a place at the Interior Ministry Sports Centre. Still too young to race a 500 cc bike, he rode two meetings on a 125 cc machine. It didn’t appeal to him, so he trained on the 500 until he was old enough for official races.

He broke his back in the very first meeting of the season. Towards the end of the season he was back on track and racing again.

A year after the injury came his first national title, in the Czech Pairs as a reserve, and victory in the Heathersfield Golden Helmet, a junior meeting in Glasgow.

A heavy crash and loss of consciousness – then, 14 days later, the World Under-21 Team Championship final in Abensberg. He rode with a knee brace, having had blood drained from the knee before setting off, and went straight into surgery after winning bronze.
In 2007 he was riding in England for Berwick Bandits. At 18 he suffered a heavy crash and was knocked unconscious.
When he came round, according to reports at the time, he was speaking fluent English – although he had hardly known any English before. Two days later the ability had faded. Doctors put it down to a rare condition known as foreign accent syndrome.
In the press

Three junior titles in a single year. After a serious head injury and a torn kidney in Lendava, Slovenia, he was back within two months and finished sixth in the World Under-21 Championship. The same year brought a contract in Rivne, Ukraine.

His first spell in the Polish Ekstraliga with Unibax Toruń, winning silver, plus three end-of-season challenge matches for Poole Pirates. European Pairs Champion and a first wild card for the Prague Grand Prix.

A season in three countries – Gdańsk, Valsarna Hagfors and Güstrow. Czech Individual Champion, a second European Pairs title and victory in the Luboš Tomíček Memorial in front of a home crowd in Prague.

Redcar, Berwick and Newcastle, winters in Australia – and captain of Olymp Markéta Praha back home.
Berwick Bandits, 2014 · Photo: Matěj Kůs archiveThe first of three straight seasons with Redcar Bears in Middlesbrough. At home, the Czech Pairs title – and at the Prague Grand Prix, his first heat win.

A second season with Redcar Bears and, at home, a first Czech Extraliga team title with Olymp Markéta Praha.

A third year in Redcar Bears colours, and the Extraliga with Olymp Markéta Praha back home.

On loan at Berwick Bandits, averaging almost 2 points a ride. A 21-point maximum against Redcar – the first by any rider in more than a decade. Back home, a second Extraliga title.

A return to Redcar Bears and a consistent British season. He missed out on the Czech title by a point, in a run-off at Březolupy.

A British season with Newcastle Diamonds. This is where the nickname Magicman was born – coined by commentator Roy Clarke.

A third Extraliga title with Olymp Markéta Praha, in his third season as captain. Second place in the SNP (Slovak National Uprising) Golden Helmet in Žarnovica.

His final year in Britain – Redcar Bears and Newcastle Diamonds. In the last meeting of the season, at Newcastle, he broke his leg.

After the broken leg, just three more races, occasional training on the bike and an effort to get back to full health.
On he announced his retirement from racing.
‘It’s good to admit it to yourself and to know when to close that door.’

Family, mechanics, friends and sponsors – the people without whom no season would ever have got under way.

Around speedway since childhood. He prepared the bikes and, as a tireless driver, ‘would only let go of the wheel in England or Moscow’.

A former amateur rider and ‘a great psychologist during races’. He travelled with the team to every meeting in England and to a few in Europe each year.

They gave him a base when he first arrived in England and, over time, became his family. Colin is also a photographer.

He stood by Matěj’s side practically from the very beginning. His company MPM was also among the first sponsors.
